Much is expected from European golf in 2011 with the Ryder Cup tidily tucked away in Monty’s lounge, and England’s Lee Westwood proudly boasting the title of “World Number 1!”

The bar has been raised and golf fever has gripped the nation following Graeme McDowell’s victorious putt on the 18th at Celtic Manor. But, with the winter depression hitting England, there has never been a better time to test yourself and experience the virtues of Europe’s range of golfing destinations…and Sport.co.uk have unearthed an absolute diamond… The Polaris World Resort in Murcia, Spain.

Just an hour’s drive from Alicante airport in the southern eastern part of Spain, Polaris World Resort resides in the relatively untouched region of Murcia, in Mar Menor, located in rural surroundings of the Costa Calida.

A beautiful drive through olive groves and classically dramatic Spanish relief, lies the 5* Inter Continental hotel and spa, where we were greeted with friendly smiles, and immediately informed to swap the casual wear, for shorts and spikes. After a cheeky (large) pint of Estrella Damm, a pale, but energized group of sport hacks headed for the first tee of the La Torre golf course.

Designed by American golf legend and 18-times Major winner Jack Nicklaus, La Torre can challenge the most talented with its plentiful array of bunkers, but also provide a gentle introduction with un-intimidating tee shots, and fantastic facilities including top tuition and guidance throughout your stay.

The course is manicured to perfection and beautifully landscaped so it neatly fits in with the natural terrain – the woes of the hustle and bustle of London, and the dreary winter were quickly forgotten. If La Torre was anything to go by the golf was set to get better and better…
The following morning we were introduced to a simply stunning hidden gem of a golf adventure, just a short five-minutes shuttle ride from the hotel El Valle. The course setting is a cross between Dogon country Ghana, the deep south of America, and the traditional arid plains of Southern Spain, conjuring bountiful images of Seve Ballesteros clad in Indiana Jones attire.

A hidden gem

A dessert valley hideaway that subtly tests the seasoned swordsman, wet my appetite for both a golfing destination and a secluded nugget of affordable holidaying bliss. 

The tight fairways and winding holes are matched with super-quick greens that provided a challenging round of golf. We finished in the beautifully styled clubhouse that overlooks the 18th green, looking out and beyond, into the out-stretched stunning Murcia landscape.
A nod of approval at the sheer wonderment was shared, as we were sure we had unearthed a little Mecca for swinging fanatics - great golf, 5* accommodation, quaint but dramatic surroundings, and all at a competitive rate compared to the likes of its rivals such as La Manga.

The accommodation was everything expected from an InterContinental hotel. All rooms are styled with cutting-edge design, and kitted out with every 5* refinement with the extra-large beds providing the perfect cushion to a weary golfer’s muscles and limbs. The £24million, 64-room hotel also attracts the glitterati with silver screen legend Woody Allen one of the first to explore the exclusive complex.

The Trattoria Acacia is recommended for a post-round bite, providing fantastic Italian food, while the Irish pub kept a gang of sports fanatic journalists not only well-refreshed, but up-to date with all the Premier League and Champions League football.

The gentlemen’s golf weekend away is a competitive market-place, but when able to boast average temperatures of 70 degrees Fahrenheit, and coursing sunshine 320 days a year, Murcia has something bigger and better to offer the value-hunting golf enthusiast.
