Polaris World Spain News - 20,000 applicants for 500 jobs at new Corvera airport

As expected, there was a huge demand for places on the training courses which will supply workers for the future International Airport of the Region of Murcia at Corvera.

The deadline for applications was last week, and according to the Servicio Regional de Empleo y Formación (SEF) there were over 20,000 applicants in total.

Applications began on 10th January, but the real avalanche started on the 22nd, and the initial evaluations of candidates has had to be postponed in some cases until as late as the middle of March.

The variety of applicants for the different jobs has been surprising, according to SEF sources, and although the need for spoken English surprised some applicants they mostly applied for anything they could. Even university graduates have been found applying for cleaning jobs, so desperate are they to find a steady job.

It is down to the municipalities of Murcia and Fuente Álamo to organize the training courses, since they are included in the Airport Rural Development Plan, which was issued in 2004. The whole of Fuente Álamo is affected, but only some outlying areas of the municipality of Murcia, namely Corvera, Los Martínez del Puerto, Valladolises and Lo Jurado. The plan establishes that candidates living in Murcia and Fuente Álamo will have preference over others.

The first stage of selection from the 20,000 applicants has already begun, with 40 candidates undergoing an exam in Fuente Álamo last week. Other candidates who were unable to prove a high level of English through certificates obtained will sit the same exams.

The aim is for 1,100 of the 20,000 candidates to start training in May. From these, the Autonomous Community will select 575 to be contracted, and the others will be held in the database of Aeromur (the airport management company) for future requirements. 50 training courses will be run in the municipalities of Fuente Álamo and Murcia. Each course will last between 85 and 250 hours, depending on the speciality, and the total duration will be 11 months, the intention being to end at the same time as the official opening of the airport in the first half of 2012.

Meanwhile work at the airport continues apace, with visible progress on the main structures and vast amounts of earthmoving taking place around the perimeter of the site as runways, parking and external structures take form.

With the expected increase in tourism to the region that the new airport will bring, there has never been a better time to invest in property at Polaris World Spain. To find your perfect retreat in Spain, visit our website www.polarisworldspain.com
