Mar Menor is Europe's largest salt-water lake. The Romans understood the significance of this lake and set up an extraction industry and they built spas to make use of the therapeutic powers that the salty water offered. It also has some wetlands that are a natural habitat to many different species of bird and other wildlife.
When the Moors settled the area they too took advantage of the recuperative effects and built upon the existing infrastructure, creating their own towns such as Los Alcazares. They also irrigated the land so farming could take place and were responsible for improving fishing methods which helped the area to prosper during their time.
The Mar Menor hosts one of the most famous sports resorts: La Manga Club. The range of sports on offer are windsurfing, water skiing, wakeboarding, kayaking and also jet skiing. However, jet skiing by Spanish law requires a license otherwise they will not hire one out to you. There is tuition ranging from beginner to more advanced for most of these sports and equipment is readily available for hire. There are also regular boat trips and the opportunity to sail on these fairly calm waters. The water temperature is on average 5°C warmer than the surrounding Mediterranean Sea so often has swimmers taking advantage of this all the year-round.
Besides these adventurous water sports if you want to take in something more relaxing, then dropping a rod in the Mar Menor may reel you in a pleasant supper. Otherwise you may just want to take in the pleasant surrounding with a healthy ramble or a round of golf at one of the local courses.
Interesting places to visit around Mar Menor are Cartagena, Los Alcazares and San Javier. Cartagena is the home of the Spanish Navy and has been a significant military outpost for a long time. Los Alcazares plays homage to the Moorish occupation in times gone by and San Javier is the home of Murcia airport. And a little mention for Lo Pagan - healing mud baths also famous for their healing properties.
Though there is Murcia airport which is only 10 minutes drive away from Mar Menor, the transfer provisions are more limited to those provided by Alicante airport. Alicante airport is approximately 40 minutes drive. It has a shuttle service too, taxis and car hire. The strongest recommendation is to book these in advance and this should be possible if done at the same time as booking your flight tickets whether through a travel agent or online. Also consider that if you wish to visit one of the many golf courses or the towns surrounding the Mar Menor area then a car will give you the greatest amount of flexibility, which can be offered too through your choice of accommodation and renting your holiday home can be chosen to fit in with the ambience of this famous health and sports resort.
